After some very helpful comments from Lynn and Shelia regarding my lumping and not letting Webster think for himself, you will notice that I did very well letting him figure out that the eventual goal was all four legs on the board; HOWEVER, I became impatient toward the end as you watch me walk the length of the board with him.......progress.......not perfection.
Let Web do the Work
I watched the second Flip first. Whoopee! Lots of good training going on here. At 147 Web was truly back In the Game and you started using the DIRECTION of the treat to encourage him to keep walking toward the end of the board. Perfectly done. And look at the result....walking the board in either direction. The board was in a slightly different location and direction. You kept Web on his toes when his interest drifted by changing your location without luring with your body. My only suggestion would be to continue to click the MOTION. Nice work.
ReplyDeleteI Ditto Lynn's comments! I really liked how you used treat placement to further his practice of being on the board walking end to end! You have really become fluent in changing your position to change the picture making walking the board Webster's job no matter where you are. Additionally I really appreciate your realization that you become frustrated. The next step is to WALK AWAY when that feeling comes up. STOP training. Take a break! 30 seconds of training without frustration beats any amount of training with frustration for both trainer and dog!
ReplyDeleteThe same goes for sniffing, if Web gets distracted and you do anything to get him back in the game, you are doing the work. IGNORE HIM Walk away. You have the food! Come back later allow him to try again. Like Sue's "teaching your dog to eat" ( don't want to eat? OK food goes away) if he doesn't pay attention, isn't "in the game" the game leaves! Wait a few minutes and give him another chance. He can earn his dinner, or not. His decision. Soon you will see that his habit of sniffing is diminished as his attention span increases.
Karen your ability to absorb and implement the coaching you are receiving is wonderful! You are a much quicker study than you give yourself credit for! There is always more to learn (FOR US ALL) and your enthusiasm keeps me in the game and helps me polish my skills as I learn along with you! Thanks for sharing your journey with me!
